Ki67--What does that REALLY mean?

The Healing Net - May 14, 2015

Ki67 is a special stain that gives a sense of how aggressive a tumor is.  The pathologist takes the biopsy or surgical specimen, prepares it, puts it on to a glass slide, stains it for this protein, and look at it under the microscope.  It's a protein in cells that is involved in cell replication, so if many cells are expressing it, the tumor is growing quickly; if very few cells express it, then it is growing slowly.  The pathologist needs to count about a thousand cells and determine the percentage of cells that are Ki67 positive.  Therefore, the number that comes back should be a percentage from 0 - 100%.

Endoscopy as NET Diagnostic Tool

The Healing Net - April 14, 2015

Endoscopy is a very useful diagnostic tool.  As with everything, it has its strengths and weaknesses.  In general, it is a means of looking at the inside of a tube within your body.  Most of the time it is used to look at the digestive tract (stomach, intestines, colon, rectum).  You put it into the tube, inflate some air, and take a look around with the camera.  If you see anything strange on the inside of the tube, you can pluck it off with a biopsy.  If it's small enough, you may be able to remove it completely.

Surgery and Treatment Options for NET Cancers

What are the surgical and treatment options for carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumor patients?  For patients with tumors that have spread to the liver which therapies should be used to improve quality and quantity of life? How do patients benefit from clinical trials? There is an explosion of technologies coming not only in the diagnostics but also in the treatments of these rare cancers. View the video below:
